Jeremy Wong

Head of Creative Development / Pipa

As an award-winning Singaporean pipa musician and creative, Jeremy Wong (@jerwong) has dedicated his career to pushing the boundaries of fusion music through dynamic performances, innovation, and multidisciplinary collaborations. He studied the pipa under Dr. Samuel Wong from the age of 14 and, by 18, had already won the 1st and 2nd prizes in the Pipa Youth and Open categories of the biennial National Chinese Music Competition, as well as 3rd prize at the Asian Youth Music Competition 2007 (Chinese Music). After graduating from Singapore Polytechnic with a Diploma in Music and Audio Technology, he attained Distinction in Diploma for Pipa Performance and served with the Singapore Armed Forces Music and Drama Company during his national service.

Jeremy’s commitment to the pipa extends beyond traditional performance. Since 2017, he has been a core musician of The TENG Ensemble, contributing to its signature fusion sound across numerous concerts, recordings, and projects. From 2007 to 2017, he was the Principal Pipa of the award-winning Toa Payoh West Chinese Orchestra. Never one to settle for the status quo, he collaborated with Samuel Wong and luthier Toh Koon Swee in 2012 to develop the electro-acoustic pipa, expanding the instrument’s potential in contemporary and crossover music.

As a recording artist, Jeremy has worked on major international projects, including recordings for the 2010 Youth Olympic Games in Singapore and Riot Games’ League of Legends and Teamfight Tactics. He also collaborated with IXsound to record and sample a pipa virtual instrument (Solo Pípá), meticulously capturing the 2,000-year-old instrument for modern producers and composers. His cross-genre collaborations extend to contemporary music, including his work on The Art of War II EP with Axel Brizzy, Calista Liaw, Wovensound, and Khalif Rawi, which was listed as one of the “Best Albums and EPs from Singapore in 2023” by Bandwagon.

As the Head of Creative Development at The TENG Company, Jeremy works closely with composers, arrangers, musicians, visual artists, filmmakers, and therapists to bring innovative projects to life. He has overseen and contributed to the development of numerous concerts, live experiences, and recordings, including Music for Mindfulness, an initiative integrating music and wellness. His work continues to explore new ways of blending music with other artistic and innovative practices, conceptualizing and creating productions that reimagine classical Chinese music in fresh and unexpected ways.

Jeremy’s approach to creative production is rooted in a deep understanding of both tradition and innovation. Whether curating immersive concert experiences, developing cross-disciplinary collaborations, or exploring new sonic landscapes through technology, his work challenges conventions while ensuring that Chinese music remains dynamic and relevant for future generations.
